Court Wizard issue appears to have been resolved...

It APPEARS as if the problems with Court Wizard and Amazon have been resolved.  Please let me know if you continue to have problems accessing the book.  Thank you for your patience.  It was them, not me.

Oh, and I'm planning to release Spellmonger's Yule, a novella, as a preamble to next year's Necromancer.  Hawklady is still in composition, but got slowed down when I lost my job and had to focus on my Podium stuff and . . . well, I have teenagers.  Hoping to still have Hawklady out by the holidays, but I hate to promise.  We'll just have to see how things move along.  Now that the issue with CW is resolved, I need to finish up my edits to Warmage before I send it to Podium (almost done, I swear!) and get the pronunciation guide finished for the book.  Which, in some cases, means I have to decide how some words are pronounced.

Thanks again for your patience.  More Spellmonger (and other stuff) coming up!

    1. Providing you with your fix does put food on my table. Now I'm doing it full-time.

    2. Well, I can help...just as soon as the next book is ready. :) While I am sorry to see you without a job (been there too) I am happy to hear that you have been pushed into full time writing. You are a great story teller. I wish you all the success in your writing and look forward to reading more of your stories for as long as you are able to write.

    3. Let me know when something is ready and I will add to your grocery money by purchasing ANOTHER "Spellmonger" book. I read incessantly because I've got little else I'm able to do! Keep'em coming!

  3. Hey Terry,

I am still hoping to get a signed hardcover copy of spell monger when the series go live.

This is my favorite book series apart from lotr.

    Cheers

  4. Ditto the sentiments about losing your job. As a possible solution, any thoughts of starting a Patreon? Members get earlier access to drafts? It could also help out the editing process.

  5. Yeah. I'm on my third read through (back to back) and would love to help with editing etc. I've been talking notes too if ya want them. I'd love to help out. I think this series is the best series I've ever read. And I've read ALOT.

  6. I hope Spellmonger's Yule provides enough story to cover Alya's recovery (psuedo recovery??) ... I do think she adds to the story, keeps Min grounded, and provides a lot of the character's reasons to do things. And I would love to see what the Iron Dwarves can do to help their weapon smithing...

  7. I agree, Alya does add to the story.

  8. so wheres hawklady and the short story? is the novella at the end of it?

  9. Well i finally got my hands on this and Court Wizard, but i decided to re-read the previous books to rememeber a lot of things (like names and certain facts), and i am begining book 5 again and just remembered a question i had some time ago, do we see more of the Valley People in the series, i ask because the Kasari got a lot of screen time in book 6, and i am almost sure we see more in court wizard, but i just wonder if the Valley People will be similarly explained at some point (maybe even in one of these 2 books)

    1. I'm saving them for the second section of the series. Probably see a lot more of them around book 15 or 16.

    2. Good, i just couldn't get them out of my head, too much mistery there and the way they and the Kasari were introduced, i just keep expecting then to re appear, plus for them to be so independent they need to have something that allows it, weapons, technology, magic or a mix of all of it.

  10. Terry - Will Spellmonger's Yule be out with enough time to read it before my wife's family shows up and takes up all my holiday time?? Happy Holidays!!

    2. Working on it diligently. I just (like 30 seconds ago) submitted the revised script for Warmage for the audiobook, and once I knock out the pronunciation guide I'll get back to it. Hoping to have it out soon, but it's hard to promise.

  11. Terry i have a question about the books, why is that there isn't any mention of gunpowder? i can think of many reasons why it isn't used in war in callidor (even a mediocre mage could ignite from far away) but it would still be usefull, not only in war, plus they should have enough knoweledge to make it, not to mention if humans appeared with planes, hellicopters, etc they must have brought weapons with them. Or is there something ion callidor that doesn't let gunpowder work or be produced in meaninfull quantities?

    1. Gunpowder works and they know about it. In fact, they know about a lot of different chemical reactions. But that doesn't mean they automatically start using it for firearms, which seem pretty tame compared to the range and power of warwands.

      "What does it do?"

"It throws a rock. Really really fast."

"That's it? Uh, any apprentice can do that."

      Delete
    2. Yeah, i can see why the mages wouldn't want it, but what about the muggles (the term is too good to not use it)?, i am not sure about primitive weapons (arquebuses, musquets, etc) but a modern weapon has much more range i think, even a pistol, and i still haven't seen a mage propel a rock or better yet a lead ball against his enemies, in fact i am intrigued why no one has done it, but that may be a case of then knowing is posible but not seen the utility, and that is only projectile weapons, there is still artillery, bombs, etc, not to mention the uses in construction and mining among others, if they were pacifistic i wouldn't question it but the humans in callidor are more bloodthirsty than us (or maybe not sadly) so i find hard to believe no one tried to develop gunpowder weapons.

PD: while thinking this i started to see ways magic could counteract it as a weapon, the most simple way wasn't defense but igniting the gunpowder while it was stored, or in magazines, etc.

    3. PDD: Maybe i should tell you what got me thinking into this, there were 2 main reasons, the first was that i was thinking if i was Min or just lived there how i would try to kill a dragon, thanks to the 5th book we saw that the best way may not be direct magical attack but something more physical, the second thing that mad eme think about it was Ormar, the mage that appears in book 6 and especializes in alchemical warmagic, i just now read about something he did that generated a explosion (or at least lots of fire) so it reinforces my theory that he could introduce something like magical gunpowder.

  12. I think that most mages consider throwing rocks beneath them. But there were several scenes where they were doing that. Lorcus "threw" apples after the riot started to knock some people out? And, I think there several battles where various mages were throwing rocks, and the Gurvani did it as well.

I just think that there "limited" power (before Irionite) made it hard to justify throwing rocks. You might throw a rock at a battle mage...his augmented speed allows him to dodge and impale you before you got ready to defend yourself. etc.

I do think that if the society was as advanced as we think it might be, gun powder would have been a historical foot note from a more violent time.

    1. I think you nailed it with the Irionite, they are still exploring their limits and new capabilities, also they are limited into thinking everything needs magic, for example they would need to see something to dodge it, magic bullets (i will start using that as a term for any projectile more or less the size of a bullet) are perfect for defense and ambushes i think, also think big, a gun fires 1 who says they need to limit themselves like that? just fire 100 bullets like a curtain and make it imposible to dodge them all!

    2. in magelord minalan cast a word to stop all explosives that would stop all use of guns .
it was not until about the time of the american civil war that the gun became more lethal than the longbow in unarmored fighting what made the musket popular is that you could train a good musketeer in week not years and bullets it will go through most armor

    3. I wish i saw your comment MATTHEW before, i will search for that later since i can't remember it (wich chapter was it BTW?), also i just wanted to point out that my mind issue with the whole thing was that these kind of weapons didn't evolve during the period magic was in the decline, but i think i found the real answer for that: is a cultural thing, the narasi seen to pride themselves in their stupidity (sorry if this sounds offensive but i really hate their actitude), their actitude is the biggest obstacle in advancing anything new, plus any intelectual or smart persons must find themselves really demotivated.

    4. The fruit of that tree was every protective spell I could think of. Glyphs of warding against fire, flood, rot, insects, and vermin. Spells of comfort for the sitting room, peace and passion for the bedroom, and my lab had the usual arsenal of wards every competent mage invests in his private space to keep the risk of accidental explosion at bay.

This is from chapter 3 of mage lord

  13. Ok this is a purely whimsical question, more ofd a curiosity than a question really, but in book 6 once Minalan recovers and returns to the march, he mentions that his 3 aprentices all looked ready to cry and that one did, but he wasn't going to reveal who, well that is my question who of the 3 cried?

    1. Rondal....
Min would have teased Dara if it was her, and everyone expects the females to get all senstiive.
Tyndal would have expected Min to recover fully and could not fathom him dieing....ot its impact to him.

So that leaves Rondal as the only one who is sensitive enough and thinks enough about what Min means to him.

  15. I dont want to be rude, but I like REALLY hope that we get a now a few books about Minalan. He is my favorite, his story is on a cliff hanger >.>
(I dont like Tyndal, but it was hinted that he would save the princess and a young knight against hopeless odds to save a princess sounds fantasy-bookish to me...)

Did we get any hints about the pov in Necromancer?

    1. Mmm, i am still re-reading Enchanter before moving to the 2 newest books but that comment really intrigues me, and i am also eagerly waiting for the next Minalan focused book, nothing like a really powerfull protagonists thirsty for vengeance and Justice, honestly while reading enchanter i can't stop thinking Min needs to be a little more hardass, be a little more open with his powers, burn a few castles and people, kind of remind the nobles (mostly the queen and prince) just how painful a battle or war against him would be, that and while tragic the events of Enchanter certainly seen to have motivated him.

      Delete
    2. Yeah it was painful in Enchanter how indecisive he was. Of course that's prob how TM wanted us to feel :-).

    3. I agree, the events in Enchanter should make up of the hardest times in his personal life...

    4. I am ok with enchanter as long as he learned the lesson: sometimes doing nothing is worse than doing something bad; and of course that now Min is more aggresive or at least a little more assertive in using his power, i do love it when the protagonist is fueled by rightous fury!

The book costs 40-80€ from ebay, that doubles the original price ^-

  18. This is from the Magelord on Kindle. What is the missing part from chapter 40? The paragraph just stops mid-sentence before jumping to the next paragraph.

"Yeoman Vano, who had spent most of the year leading the stubborn peasantry of Brestal Village, was nearly as generous with the wedding tribute as Sagal. Sir Cei had been extremely supportive of his efforts to coax the Brestali into prosperity, and a full

But no one outdid Yeoman Rollo, the headman of the village now known as Boval Hall. When his manor gave to their castellan’s wedding, they did so with unrestrained pride."

    1. Dude, I'm working on it. Might post the first portion of Spellmonger's Yule tonight, on the blog, as a present. But it isn't finished yet, I'm sorry. This week has seen my father in intensive care with congestive heart failure and my son getting poor results on a liver biopsy. That being said, I have done more than twenty pages on it. I might could post a teaser, after I get done wrapping presents and conducting the sacred Santa rites . . .
